Winton THE BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING At the monthly meeting of the Winton Borough Council on Monday night, the Mayor (Mr T. Walker), presided over Councillors Stenhouse, Metzger, Butler, Eastlake, Tilley and McArthur. A letter was received from the Commissioner of Transport advising that as from January 1, 1938 the department was taking over the issuing of motor drivers’ licences. The letter was received.

The Tauranga Borough Council wrote stating that it had lodged a protest with the Minister of Transport against the issuing of drivers’ licences by the department, because of the loss it would mean to the smaller boroughs, and asking for the council's support The letter was received. The Reserves Committee and its associate members submitted alternative schemes of tree planting to commemorate the Coronation, to plant an avenue of horse chestnuts, to be known as Coronation Avenue, along the Great North Road, from Albert Street to the borough boundary, or to plant shrubs in, and generally beautify the recreation reserve and rename the reserve Coronation Park.

Mr T. N. Mitchell, an associate member of the Reserves Committee, outlined details of the two proposals. Cr. Metzger spoke, in favour of the improvement of the recreation reserve. The idea of an avenue on the North Road was an excellent one, and could be gone on with as well, but there was no doubt that the council had spent very little money on the reserve in past years, and this would be an excellent opportunity to start a scheme of improvement which could afterwards be carried on by the sports bodies. Cr Eastlake, dissenting, held that it would cost far too much for a worthwhile scheme of improvement on the reserve, and this was a matter for the sports bodies themselves. The trees should be planted where visitors to the town could see them, and the Great North Road was the best place. After, some discussion it was decided on the motion of Crs McArthur and Eastlake to adopt the plan of a Coronation Avenue from Albert street to the boundary. An amendment in favour of the recreation reserve scheme, moved by Cr Metzger and seconded by Cr Butler, was defeated. It was decided to buy 300 bronze Coronation medals for the school children of Winton.
