ORANGE SHORTAGE

GOVERNMENT NOT TO BLAME (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 24. A statement that the Government was in no way to blame for the shortage of oranges was made by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) today. The Australian Government had advised that there were none available from the Commonwealth. The Californian season had been a poor one, the Cook Islands supply was late and was not likely to be shipped before May. The Doric Star, which arrived at Auckland on Thursday, brought 8000 cases of Jamaican oranges, of which approximately a third are for the South Island. A further 3400 cases will arrive early next month, while on May 14 the Mariposa will probably bring between three and four thousand cases. Later in the month there should be a shipment from Rarotonga.
