Fireside Stools

Three fireside stools, designed for boys who want something easy to make before the end of the first term, are shown here with full details in the diagrams.

The simplest form is shown in detail in Figure 2. The frame has two rails Ift x 2in x Jin, and two sin x 2in x Jin, assembled as shown, and dowelled or half lap-pointed. A covering of 3-16 in plywood glued and nailed over the frame, will strengthen it, and hold

the stuffing material. A set of turned legs (shown in the separate diagram) should be glued into the

frame with a half pin. The stuffing may be horsehair, wool, cotton wool or flock, and it should be covered

with calico, and then with a leather cloth tacked firmly round the frame. A bought gimp or a strip of the' material folded to make one should be tacked round for finishing.

The stool shown in Figure 3 is made on similar lines, the framing and plywood cover being formed exactly the same. But a shallow box-like frame is made from 2in wide material, and is nailed under the top frame, and glue blocked in

the corners. A set of turned feet, 2Jin x lin should be screwed to the corners, and the stool should be covered with leather cloth in the way shown for the first stooh The most useful of the three stools is shown in Figure 4. It is of the box kind with a hinged lid. If it is to be covered completely with leather cloth, Jin soft wood of any kind will fee quite satisfactory. If it is not to be covered entirely, better wood must be chosen. The box is made 15in x lOin x sJin, the sides being nailed to the ends. The bottom is fitted after the four legs have been fixed to its cor* ners.

A reader has asked for instructions for making the figure 8 needle-made lace stitch. Next week we shall publish a stitch that goes into the shape of the figure 8; but if any reader knows of a stitch with that name we should » be very glad to have directions for making it.
