FIFTY PER CENT. OWNED BY EMPIRE Informative figures relative to the world’s sheep population are given in the latest report of the Imperial Economic Committee. Australia leads the British Empire, as the following figures show: — Australia 112,500,000 Union of South Africa 35,800,000 New Zealand 29,100,000 United Kingdom 25,100,000 Canada 3,400,000 Irish Free State 3,000,000 Somaliland 2,500,000 South-West Africa 2,200,000 Tanganyika 1,900,000 Nigeria (including British Cameroons) 1,900,000 Basutoland 1,700,000 Uganda 1,100,000 Falkland Islands 600,000 A comparson with flocks of foreign countries will be read with interest in view of the present world wool situation. They are tabulated in the following order: — Soviet Union (Russia) 61,100,000 United States of America 51,700,000 Argentina 38,000,000 Turkey 12,400,000 Rumania 11,800,000 France 9,600„000 . Yugoslavia 9,200,000 Bulgaria 8,800,000 Greece 8,200,000 Algeria 5,800,000 Germany 3,900,000 Poland 2,800,000 Although the Empire total is slightly less than that of foreign countries the wool production of the Empire countries is very much in advance. The average weight of wool in many Central European countries is about 31b a head, or less than half of that in most British exporting countries.
