The attempts by Australian breeders to develop a suitable type of sheep for the export of fat lamb for overseas markets has been mainly responsible for the best export prices for 10 years for Canterbury stud and flock sheep, according to Mr M. E. Lyons, secretary of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The Australian breeders have been _ seeking Southdown and Border Leicester sheep, and the export to that country of these breeds has been particularly heavy. South Africa and South America have also contributed to the good season, Mr Lyons adds, but not to the same extent. Within Canterbury the prices for these classes of sheep have not been anything out of the ordinary, in most cases.
