Fifty Years Ago Today

(From The Southland Times) APRIL 23, 1887 Note for Householders.—On Monday evening at 7.30 the meetings for the elections of school committees throughout the Southland district will be held, in nearly every instance, in the schoolhouse of the locality. School committees have recently got on very well with theii constituents, but there is no reason why the householders should relax their attention to the important question of education, and it is desirable that those meetings should be attended by all who can possiblv make it convenient. The Waterworks Site.—ln reply to a lette rsent to the Premier as to the right of the Borough Council to sink a well and erect a water tower on the Town Belt, Mr G. Goodwillie has received the following communication: “Sir, —I am in receipt of your letter of the 7th inst., asking me whether the Borough Council of your town can use a Recreation Reserve for water works purposes. In my opinion the council cannot do so, and any ratepayer, by taking proper proceedings, can put an end to such a misuse of a recreation reserve.—Yours, etc., Robert Stout." A Moving Subject—For reasons given, Mr W. H. Mathiieson this morning announces by advertisement that he is prepared to sell his varied stock of vehicles at prices in accordance with the times—which are low enough for anybody. It will be seen that the stock includes traps of nearly every style built to suit all requirements of town or country work, or pleasure.
