WINTON HIGH SCHOOL

To The Editor Sir,—I read with interest “Ex-com-mitteeman’s” reply to “Citoyen” in which he says that the candid opinions of the parents why they send their children to town schools would be much the same. Well, being a mother with children soon ready for secondary teaching I casually made some inquiries from some of the parents who send their children to other schools outside the district. No. one on being asked if they received better tuition said: “Oh, I do not knovz, but the uniform looks so distinctive. I think they look smarter especially with the new cap which the boys wear.” No. two said her girl had the time of her life travelling in the train “and then she does a lot of messages for me.” No. three said: “Well, if your child wants a position, education at a larger school seems to appeal to people.” So I did not make

any more inquiries, being no wiser on the educational part of it. I do we have as good facilities in our Winton school, if we have the attendance. -Yours, etc., mqther _ April 22, 1937.

To The Editor

Sir,—l have read with great interest two letters in connection with the Winton District High School, published in your columns. I, too, feel it is time the Education Board did something to stop this drift to town schools when we have such fine buildings and teachers available in our own district. Why did the department concede the request to build such a fine building and then permit the children to travel free to larger centres, while the taxpayer has to pay for. a building depreciating without being useful. I do think that if free passes were refused to the many children who now go out of the district it would settle the matter and we would see a bigger staff instead of a diminishing one at the Winton District High School. Trusting some of our able parents will take this matter up and see that the Winton school is placed on Southland’s map with greater distinction. —Yours, etc., PARENT. April 22, 1937.
