Tully is the guest of Miss Nance Houston, One Mile, Queenstown. Mrs A. F. Manning, recently of Gore, has been appointed organist of the First Presbyterian Church of Invercargill. Miss Phyllis Allison, of Hawea Flat, Otago Central, is the guest of Mrs R. G. Alington, Spey street. Mrs Hunter and Mrs Jago, Queenstown, have left to spend a holiday in the north. Miss M. Mayhew has returned to Invercargill after being the guest of Mr and Mrs W. Hales, Queenstown. Miss Catherine Mac Gibbon, of Mataura, has been appointed to the Home Science faculty of the Otago University. Mr and Mrs T. Malcolm, Mr and Mrs W. Kissell, Miss N. S. Dick and Miss M. G. Bain, of Invercargill, were recent visitors to the Hermitage, Mount, Cook. Mr S. S. Smith and his daughter, Miss Geraldine Smith, Mount Lawley, Perth, Western Australia, are touring the southern lakes after a holiday at the Hermitage, Mount Cook. Mrs G. H. Cossins, of Timaru, who has been the guest of her daughter, Mrs P. W. Gresson, Albert street, leaves today to stay in Dunedin with Mrs Russell Ritchie before returning to Timaru on Sunday. The resignation of Miss E. M. Wann from the teaching staff of the Southland Technical College was accepted at the meeting of the college board last evening. The principal (Mr C. A. Stewart) said that Miss Wann had been an efficient and popular member of the staff.

On Wednesday afternoon a social in aid of the funds of the Methodist Church was given by the ladies’ guild in Barber’s hall. The Rev. Knowles Smith presided and extended a welcome to all those present. Items were contributed by Miss M. McKenzie and Mrs Jack Walker (pianoforte duets), Miss Lily Hunter (viohn solos), Mesdames Milley, E. Parsons and J. Walker (songs). The stall-holders were Mesdames B. Johnson, T. Roderique and J. Thompson. Brisk business was done, and the effort proved a successful one in every way. The opoortunity was taken by those present to become acquainted with the Rev. Knowles Smith and Mrs Smith, who have recently come from the North Island, and the former in moving a vote of thanks to the stall-holders, performers, and all who had assisted, expressed his pleasure at seeing so many of his parishioners and members of other denominations present. He specially thanked . Mrs Milley for coming from Invercargill to help at the function.

The wedding was solemnized in the Roman Catholic Church, Gore, recently of Rita Agnes, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs T. B. Scammell, Pukerau, to James, youngest son of Mrs McAuliffe and the late Mr J. McAuliffe, of Riversdale. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Father Harrington, while Miss Carmody was organist. The bride entered the church on the arm of her father. Her frock of ivory satin was cut on classical lines. The cowl neckline was caught with sprays of orange blossom and the full sleeves were gathered from the shoulders and fell in full folds over the wrists. The back of the bodice was finished with tiny satin buttons, and the skirt formed a long train. Her embroidered tulle veil was held in place with a coronet of orange blossom. She carried a bouquet of cream asters, roses, carnations, autumn leaves and asparagus and maidenhair ferns. The bridesmaid, Miss M. Dillion, niece of the bridegroom, wore a frock of pink lace, cut on slim-fitting lines. The high neckline formed a yoke, and was trimmed with a spray of tiny flowers. The sleeves were gathered on to a band and fell in full folds over

the elbows. The back of the bodice was finished with tiny pink buttons. She wore a halo of pink tulle, softly trimmed with pink velvet flowers, and carried a bouquet of asters, sweet peas and asparagus fern. The two page boys, Masters lan Hanright and Arthur Scammell, nephews of the bride, were dressed alike in suits of ivory satin. The long trousers were formed on to a waist band, and the tight-fitting coats were cut to. resemble waistcoats and were finished with black satin bows.

The bridegroom was attended by his brother, Mr William McAuliffe, as best man, while Messrs J. McAuliffe and E. Johnson were ushers. On leaving the church the bride was presented with a silver horse shoe, a gift from her nephew, Ronald Scammell. The reception was held at the Cosy tea rooms, where the guests were received by the bride’s mother, assisted by the bridegroom’s mother. The former wore a frock of floral silk marocain with a navy hat and coat, and carried a bouquet of asters and sweet peas. The latter wore a frock of navy wool marocain with a hat and coat to match. She carried a bouquet of asters and sweet peas. The decorated wedding cake was made by the bride’s mother. When the young couple left for the north, the bride was wearing a brown costume with hat, coat and accessories to match. Mr and Mrs McAuliffe’s future home will be in Waipahi.

A pleasant.afternoon was spent at the Anglican hall recently, there being a good attendance of women from Woodlands and surrounding districts. A competition held was won by Mrs J. A. Hannan. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses.

Miss Jeanie Lawrie, Limehills, has returned home after spending a holiday with her sister, Mrs S. C. Frisby. Mrs J. Mac Lean is visiting the West Coast. Mrs M. H. McCallum and her children left on Wednesday for a tour of Central Otago. Mr and Mrs F. Rumler are visiting Christchurch. Mr and Mrs E. C. Voice are spending a holiday in Christchurch. Miss V. Mcßae, Invercargill, was the guest of Mrs D. Anderson last week. A large crowd attended the opening of the cribbage tournaments run by the hall committee. The winners for the evening were Mrs W. Kerr, Miss E. Butcher, Mr C. Lake and Mr D. Irwin.
