Nominations for the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting close next Monday. The Otago horseman P. W. Powell has resumed riding after a lengthy illness and will be available for the Otautau meeting. Araboa was prominent early in the main event at Waimate, but hung out badly on the turning course and soon lost all chance. H. Phillips has been engaged to ride Bow Street, Ramana and Ballad _ at Otautau on Saturday. He declined several good mounts at the South Canterbury meeting. Burglar is in work again at Riccarton and he may be given a race at the Timaru meeting in May. He looks in good order. Rose of Tralee who is reported to have built up in condition is back in work at Riccarton looking in the best of health. Francis Drake has been turned out for a spell. His showing at Manawatu left no doubts as to his having trained off after his long season.

D. P. Wilson intends to bring the hurdlers Black Banner, Southdown and Fireguard to compete at the Birchwood Hunt meeting prior to racing at the Dunedin winter fixture.

Emissary has been set a stiff task in being weighted at 9.13 in the six furlongs Doncaster Handicap at Timaru next Saturday. He will be a starter (says The Press, Christchurch) and he is in excellent order.

Sanhedrin went amiss prior to Awapuni, which accounts for his absence from the fixture. It is now believed that the trouble is really serious and is located in the suspensory ligament.

Subsidy was very lame when he pulled up after his race at Ashburton, and since then it has been reported that he has suffered a complete breakdown.

Epris has been out of form for some time past, and his effort at Waimate on Saturday did not suggest that he has made any improvement since his previous appearance at Easter.

With the exception of the three principal handicaps, the Whyte, Parliamentary, and Winter Oats, the flat handicap minimum at the Wellington Winter meeting will be 8.0.

In spite of his lapse during the summer Kelly’s record this season has been profitable, with three wins, four seconds and a third, bringing in £930 in stakes. Of this amount he has won £525 and a trophy valued at £5 in the last three weeks.

The Canterbury Jockey Club has renewed the offer of a bonus of £5 for each hunter competing in a jumping event at the Grand National meeting. The bonus is paid to the hunt at whose meets the horse qualified and applies to all hunt clubs in the Dominion.

Rainier, who paid nearly a score from the win pool after his Trial Stakes success at Whangarei was bred and is owned by Mr C. G. Macindoe. He is by Vaals from Ti Tree, by Tea Tray, from Taiamai, an Australian-bred mare by The Nut from Lady Molly (imp.), by Aurum.

Glorietta started at a long price when she won the Manawatu Cup on Saturday, but because of her consistent form of late she richly deserved her win. She is one of the few of the stock of Brigand racing at present, and she is a worthy representative of a well-bred sire. In Glorietta Mr E. F. C. Hinds has secured a very solid pacer.

Transfer, who won a double at the Thames meeting, and Transworthy, another winner during the day, are halfbrothers. Transfer was got by Peter Bingen and Transworthy by Worthy Bond. Tranquil, the dam of both horses, was got by Wildmoor, a son of Wildwood and the imported mare, Alice Azmoor.

The apprentices, W. Doyle, who was associated with J. Donohoe’s Melbourne stable, and A. Caffiyn, whj was with F. T. Cush, have arrived in New Zealand. Doyle is now indentured to T. George, and Caffyn will complete his apprenticeship with J. Fryer, whose team includes the Melbourne Cup winner, Wotan.

A member of the Forbury Park committee is reported to have stated that the single pool system is favoured in Southland, but practically every club in the province has adopted win-and-place. betting (comments The Timaru Herald).

The reconstruction of the brush fences of the steeplechase course at Te Rapa on the lines followed on English courses, is being carried out. The new style of lowering the battens and increasing the height of the brush may have the effect of minimizing the possibility of bad spills in the future.

During the short time that Kiltowyn has been in commission at Ellerslie he has done well and is gradually losing some of his surplus condition. So far his tasks have been restricted to easy pacing, and it will be some little time before he is ready to race. If the son of Kilbroney can be got back to his best form he will have to be reckoned with in middle distance handicaps, despite the fact that he has been out of action for some time.

Pooley Bridge, having failed in the Australian Cup and the Williamstown Easter Cup, two long races in which he was expected to do well, will now be spelled by his trainer, A. Foulsham. Pooley Bridge won the last V.R.C. Grand National Hurdle Race, and when put in work again his attention will be turned to jumping. The maximum weight in the V.R.C. Grand National Steeplechase is 12.7, and Pooley Bridge is likely to be prepared for that race.
