CULTURE OF THE DAFFODIL
N.Z. HORTICULTURIST HONOURED (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 21. Mr H. J. Poole, the well known horticulturist of Lower Hutt, has received a cablegram from the Royal Horticultural Society announcing that he has been awarded the Peter Barr Memorial Cup for his work on the culture of the daffodil. The award is a great honour, not only to Mr Poole but to New Zealand, this being the first time since it was first awarded in 1912 that it has gone outside the United Kingdom. Mr Barr was the first person to take up seriously the culture of the daffodil. He visited Ney/ Zealand in 1880 and it was because of his enthusiasm that the first Daffodil Society was formed in New Zealand in 1899. Mr Poole has received other cablegrams from people in London congratulating him. He was also congratulated by many friends at the Lower Hutt Autumn Show.
