DISPUTE ON THE KAREPO

VESSEL STILL HELD UP (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, April 21. The dispute on the cargo vessel Karepo is still unsettled and the vessel is still held up. It is understood that the trouble is due to dissatisfaction on the part of the deckhands in respect to certain officers on the steamer. Members of the crew stated today that the real cause of the dispute was that the Union Company had refused a request that they should be paid off on Monday morning. On the arrival of the vessel on Sunday morning they had given 24 hours notice of their intention to terminate their engagement The company, however, had refused to accept notice and consequently the “hold-up” was not the fault of the deckhands. The men stated that they did not desire to disclose the reason for their vhhxzfi xzfi xzfi xzfi xz request to be paid off, but added that under certain conditions they would be prepared to go to sea again. They claimed that their action did not constitute a refusal to man the ship.
