THE WEATHER CHANGEABLE AND SQUALLY
(Special to The Times) WELLINGTON, April 21. Following is the special weather forecast for Southland, as issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington:— Moderate to strong south-west to southerly winds, reaching gale force at times in exposed positions. Weather changeable and squally, with passing showers and, in places, hail. Some snow on the ranges. Temperatures becoming cold. Seas rough. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather changeable and squally, with intermittent rain in most districts, and some heavy falls, more especially in the western and far southern parts. Temperatures becoming colder tomorrow, snow being probable on the ranges and some hail in the coastal areas of the South Island. General Situation.—A deep western depression is advancing on to the Dominion, while the pressure is rising over south-eastern Australia. Winds—Moderate to strong northwesterly to westerly, rising to gale force at places about and south of Cook Strait; a change to southerly probable durnig tonight in the far south and extending over most of the Dominion within the next 24 hours. Seas.—New Zealand waters, rough south of Cape Egmont and in the Cook and Foveaux Straits areas; elsewhere moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea.— Strong westerly winds to gales, backing to southerlies soon in the southern portion, and southerlies becoming general tomorrow. Seas rough.
At one o’clock this morning the weather was cloudy and overcast, with rain falling steadily. The barometer readings for the last three mornings have been as follows:—
