Fifty Years Ago Today

(From The Southland Times) APRIL 22, 1887 Municipal.—The Borough Council of Gore is gazetted to be subject to the provisions of the Public Bodies Leaseholds Act, 1886. Invercargill Racing Club.—At a special meeting of the stewards of this club held at the Prince of Wales Hotel yesterday evening the programme prepared by the sub-committee for the Jubilee meeting to be held on the Park Reserve on June 21 next was approved. Several novelties have been introduced, including a carters’ race for bona fide licensed carters’ horses. The programme also comprises a number of athletic events, so that the meeting, no doubt, will be a popular one.

The Waimumu Difficulty.—A public meeting of ratepayers in the Mataura town district and Lindhurst Road Board district was held on Tuesday night (Mr H. Cameron in the chair) to consider a proposal to constitute the lands affected by the overflow from the Waimumu stream a river district. The report of the county engineer and engineer to the Town Board was read and also the recommendation of the Works Committe of the Town Board, after which the following resolutions were carried unanimously: (1) That this meeting does not think it necessary to constitute a river district, believing the rates already levied sufficient for all requirements; (2) that this meeting recommend the work to be carried out by the County Council in accordance with the report furnished by the Town Board by Messrs Haworth and Gardiner, engineers, and dated February 6, 1385.
