Tapanui WOMEN’S GUILD

SALE OF GIFTS The Tapanui Presbyterian Women’s Guild held a gift sale in the Sunday School Hall recently. The Rev. W. H. Norton explained the objects of the sale, and called on the Mayor (Mr J. S. Varcoe) to declare the sale open. The Mayor thanked the Women’s Guild for its invitation to be present and complimented them on their efforts to remove the debt from the Sunday School hall. He handed the chairman a cheque as his donation and declared the gift sale ready for business. The attendance was good, and there was a brisk sale of goods and articles at the various stalls. Several competitions were held, Mrs A. Ferguson winning the wool-winding, with Mrs A. G. Elder, Miss A. Gibson, nail-driving, and W. Grant, nail-driving (boys). Baking competitions.—Nut loaf: Mrs J. Most points in the above four competitions: Mrs T. Edgar. WOMEN’S DIVISION The annual meeting of the Crookston branch of the Women’s Division ot the Farmers’ Union was held recently. The election of officers resulted:— President, Miss G. Pullar; secretary, Miss M. Fleming. Votes of thanks were passed to the retiring president, Mrs M. Potts, and secretary, Mrs O. Potts. The competition: “Best raspberry jam” was won by Miss G- Pullar. The prize for most points in competitions during the year was won by Mrs Revie. The roll call “a funny story” was answered by members with some amusing stories. POULTRY CLUB At a meeting of the committee of the Tapanui Poultry Club the chairman explained that the meeting had been called to discuss the alteration of the show date from Saturday, to Friday, because of the half-holiday now being held on Saturday. On the motion of Messrs Hay and McAuley it was decided that the show

be held on Friday, July 9, instead of Saturday, July 10. The secretary reported that he had represented Tapanui Club at the annual meeting of the South Island association held at Oamaru. Tapanui was allotted the following championships:—Black Orpington female (open), black or white rose comb bantam, utility White Leghorn pullet. New Zealand championships: Best Leghorn (open class). Mr Munyard (Tapanui) was congratulated by the conference on having attended the annual meetings for over 30 years. STOCK SALE There was only a moderate yarding at the stock sale and ram fair held at Tapanui. Many farmers were taking advantage of the fine day for harvesting operations, and the demand was not keen. Southdowns were not attracting much attention, but Romney rams were wanted and brought good prices. The top price for Romney rams was secured by Mr E. Baxter, 10J guineas, and for Southdowns by Mr J. D. Edgar at 4J guineas. Two-tooth ewes were sold at 30/3. PRESENTATION In the Presbyterian Sunday School over 60 friends of Miss Edna Hewat and Mr D. B. Baxter gathered to do them honour in view of their approaching marriage. A programme of competitions, games, and music was carried out. Solos were sung by Mrs D. McNeil, Miss Potts, and a duet by Mrs D. McNeil and Miss Eva Norton. Mrs H. Grace’s mandolin solo was much enjoyed. The Rev. W. H. Norton asked the guests of the evening, and also Mrs W. P. Wylie (representing the choir), Mrs A. G. Elder (primary Sunday School) and Miss Shearing (P.W.M.U.) to come forward. Mrs Wylie presented to Miss Hewat a silver tea service as a mark of appreciation for her services from the choir and Sunday school teachers. The Rev. W. H. Norton apologized for the absence of Mr D. A. McDonald, who was to speak on behalf of the church office-bearers, and said Miss Hewat’s loyal service to the church was appreciated by all. He was glad that both of the guests of the evening intended to carry on in their good work. Mr Baxter, in returning thanks for the kind wishes and presents, stated that he hoped to render more efficient service in the future. Miss Edna Hewat also replied. RUGBY FOOTBALL At the annual meeting of the Tapanui Club, the following officers were elected:—President, Mr J. D. Edgar; secretary, Mr O. Munyard; delegates to sub-union, Messrs Moffitt and Wickford; club captain, Mr J. Hand; selectors, team captain and Messrs Murray and Hand. The chairman, in presenting the report and balance-sheet, said that he regretted the present standard of play was not as high as a few years ago, but he hoped that members would unite in encouraging young members. The team finished last season as runner-up to Waikoikoi, winner of the shield. WAIKOIKOI CLUB At the Waikoikoi Club’s annual meeting there was only a fair attendance.
