THE CALEDONIAN SOCIETY
ANNUAL MEETING At the annual meeting of the Caledonian Society of Invercargill last night there were present 20 members, Mr John McGregor presiding. The balance-sheet showed that the year had begun with a credit balance of £22 and had closed with a credit of £166. In moving the adoption of the report (previously published) and balance-sheet the president congratulated the society on the healthy financial position. The directors appeared to have installed a new vigour into the society and had been particularly successful in improving the finances, he said. A fine programme of games had been drawn up for the annual gathering which had given promise of being the best ever held in Southland. Unfortunately, the infantile paralysis epidemic had made it advisable to cancel the sports and the wisdom of the decision could scarcely be doubted. The concellation of the sports had resulted in a slight loss of capital, but if it had assisted in preventing the spread of the epidemic it was money well lost. In the near future a monster dancing carnival would be held at the time cf the Coronation, partly for the purpose of celebrating that event and partly to provide competition for the big number of young dancers in the province who had been deprived of competition at a number of sports meetings in the summer. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The rules of the society were considered and a number of revisions recommended by a special committee were adopted. The following office bearers were elected President, Mr John McGregor; vice-presidents, Messrs R. Donaldson, E. W. Wright and Ellis Sutton; directors, Messrs T. Rankin, J. M. Macintosh, J. D. Campbell, R. G. Diack, H. Insall, J. Matheson, W. R. Ronald, John Ewan, W. Anderson, G. Blanks and J. Forbes; treasurer, Mr R. Donaldson. Votes of thanks were passed to the Caledonian Pipe Band of Southland, the Old Timers’ Committee, Messrs Alex Sutherland and W Graham, and the proprietors of station 4ZP.
