Wray Wilson, Grey street, leaves tomorrow on her return north. Mrs R. Mclntosh, Orawia, who has been spending a few days with her sister, Mrs Harold Rooney, Pukerau, was the guest of her sister, Mrs Glassoh, Dee street, for the week-end. Among the recent callers at New Zealand House, London, were Miss Kathleen Gilchrist, Miss C. M. Burn, Miss F. J. Anderson and Miss Edith Macdonald, of Invercargill. The engagement is announced of Patricia Lucy, only daughter of Mr and Mrs F. A. Robins, Pomona road, to Leslie Maurice, only son of Mrs H. Tobin and the late Mr Tobin, Dee ’ street, Northeftd. Last evening members of the Play Reading Circle of the Southland Women’s Club presented J. B. Priestley’s “Laburnum Grove.” The cast was as follows: —Elsie Radfem, Miss F. Watts; Mrs Baxley, Mrs J. R- Sutton; Bernard Baxley, Mrs G. H. Uttley; George Radfern, Mrs R. Bums Watson; Joe Fletten, Miss C. McHaffie; Harold Russ, Mrs J. L. Cameron; Mrs Radfem, Mrs Roy Anderson; Inspector Spack, Miss M. Casey; Sergeant Morris and chorus, Miss May Manson. The youngest of five daughters of the late Mr and Mrs John Styles, who arrived in Otago 98 years ago and once lived at Knapdale, yesterday celebrated her golden wedding. She is Mrs T. Harvey, who with her husband lives at Martinborough, Wairarapa. Their eldest son is Judge Harvey, of the Native Land Court. Each of the other four sisters celebrated her golden wedding—probably a record that few families can claim—and the families of the five sisters totalled 45. Mrs E. McAlister (Riversdale), and Mrs J. Hurley (Wendonside), are the only other daughters now living. The remaining members of the five were the late Mrs M. Heenan and the late Mrs F. Clearwater. In the Wairuna hall a kitchen evening was held, in honour .of Miss Elizabeth Brown, whose marriage took place recently. The following contributed items: —Miss Irene Elder, Mrs James Brown, Miss McPherson, Miss. McHardy, Miss Rowe, Mrs G. Mitchell, Miss M. Mitchell, Miss Molly Brown, Mr Gray (Seacliff). The accompaniments were played by Miss McHardy. Tlie chairman, Mr James Taylor, presented the gifts to the guest of honour. Mr R. Mclndoe replied on behalf of Miss Brown. Mr Taylor presented Mr R. Mclndoe with a fountain pen from the hall committee. Opportunity was also taken to make a presentation to Mr and Mrs W. Mclndoe, Mrs Herbert and Miss Mclndoe. Mr and Mrs Mclndoe have been in the district for some 40 years and have 'gone to Clinton to live. Mr Charles Divers presented Mr and Mrs Mclndoe with a chiming clock, Mrs Herbert was given a crystal vase and Miss Mclndoe a crystal salad dish. Mr P. Clarke and Mr W. I. Clarke spoke in eulogistic terms of the Mclndoe family. Mr Mclndoe responded. Winton Notes Mr and Mrs H. McDonald, Park street, were recent visitors to Orepuki. Mr and Mrs H. Cooper and their small daughter, Helen, spent the weekend at the Rocks, Riverton. Mr and Mrs A. Hagerty, Park street, are spending a holiday in Dimedin. Mr and Mrs T. Malcolm, of Drummond, spent a few days in Invercargill last week.

Miss N. Norman, of Forest Hill, spent a few days in Invercargill last week as the guest of Mrs J. McCrostie. Misses M. Tilley and T. Clark have returned from a holiday in Christchurch, Timaru and Dunedin. Miss I. Shand, Great North road, is visiting Christchurch. Mrs G. C. Cochrane, Prince street, has been spending a holiday at Tuatapere. Mrs H. Caughey, of Tussock Creek, is the guest of her mother, Mrs A. G. Dixon, Park street. Mr and Mrs Johnstone and Miss Mole, of Hamilton, have been the guests of Mrs J. H. McKenzie, Lady Barkly. Mrs Lennox Cowie, of Boggyburn, returned last week from a holiday in Lumsden, where'she was the guest of her sister, Mrs S. J. Pearce. Miss Dorothy Olive returned at the week-end from a holiday in Christchurch. ~ , Mr and Mrs J. McDonald, of Dipton, have been spending a holiday at Orepuki. Miss Dorothy Blackmun, of Lady Barkly, returned last week from a holiday in Dunedin. Mr and Mrs H. Denny, Great North road, spent last week-end at Fortrose as the guests of Mrs T. D. Hurle. Mrs R. A musical evening in aid of Anglican church funds was held at the residence of Dr and Mrs L. Bell during the week. Those who contributed items were Mrs E. Latham, Miss M. Turner (Mossburn), the Rev. H. Fallows, Mr A. Tregonning (Balfour), Dr Bell, Mrs E. Wildey, Mrs L. Bell, Mrs H. Dore, Mrs W. Johnson, Mr A. Upchurch and Mrs A. Upchurch. Rev. H. Fallows thanked the host and hostess for giving their

home for the evening. Mr H. Graham, vicar’s warden, endorsed the Rev. Fallows’s remarks. Mrs L. Bell replied. Those present were Dr and Mrs L. Bell, the Rev. H. Fallows and Mrs Fallows, Mr and Mrs A. Upchurch, Mr and Mrs H. Graham, Mr and Mrs R. Charleston; Mesdames E. Latham, J. Sims, H. Dore, W. Johnson; Misses M. Turner and R. Graham; Messrs A. Tregonning and E. Wildey.

The Rev. E. G. Wilson and Mrs Wilson and family, of Port Chalmers, are visiting the district. Mr and Mrs R. J. Inkston and their daughter, of Christchurch, who have been the guests of Mrs C. A. Welsh, Elbow Hotel, have returned home.

Mrs H. Dore has returned from a holiday spent in Invercargill. Mrs J. Clouston has returned from a visit to Dunedin, where she was the guest o fher mother, Mrs W. Thompson. Miss E. Kirkpatrick, Invercargill, has been spending a holiday in Lumsden. Miss H. Clouston, of the nursing staff of the Southland hospital, was the guest of her mother recently. Mrs J. Small, Lumsden, is spending a holiday at Waikaia.
