Winton RUGBY FOOTBALL

LUMSDEN TEAM DEFEATED

In a friendly game on the local ground on Saturday afternoon, the Winton senior team beat Lumsden by nine points to three. Play was fast, but very ragged throughout. There was no score in the first spell, the home team losing a great opportunity when White/failed to take a pass from F. McKenzie when he had a clear run in. Lumsden scored from a loose forward rush immediately: upon resumption after the interval, Winton equalizing a few minutes later when Forde beat the Lumsden full-back in a race for the ball after D. McKenzie had kicked over the line. Boyle put Winton ahead with a great penalty kick from a few yards inside halfway. Shortly before time, a concerted movement by both Winton forwards and backs ended in Murphy crossing near the corner flag. The kick failed.

There was 1 not much to choose between the two teams. Possession from the scrums and line-outs was evenly divided, but Winton were, if anything, slightly superior in the backs. Anderson, at full-back for Winton, played very soundly. In the second spell he replaced L. Lindsay at five-eighth, who had injured his arm. McDowall, a newcomer from Old Boys, played an excellent game in the forwards, while McDougall and Boyle were two others who stoo’d out in a fairly even pack. Mr R. S. Balch was the referee. Junior Game The Winton juniors lost to Central Star by nine points to nil in a friendly match at Browns. Central Star fielded nine senior players and considering that the youthful Winton side was at a hopeless disadvantage in both weight and experience, it did very well to keep the margin of points so small. Of the Winton backs, Mcllwrick, Pearce and Lavelle were the best, while Egerton, Gatley and L. Scully played well in the pack. • Mr J. W. Silke was the referee. GOLF W. C. Oleine won the men’s eclectic match at the Winton links on Saturday afternoon with a net card of 274. The following were the leading scores:— W. C. Cleine 35—7>-27J L. de la Perrelle 41—12—29 W. G. Clark 34—4J—29J

The following reductions in handicaps have been made.—G. Lindsay from 14 to 13; L. de la Perrelle from 24 to 22; R. Goodall from 21 to 20. CROQUET CLUB The closing day of the Winton Croquet Club was held on Saturday afternoon in beautiful weather, when the patron (Mrs J. R. Hamilton) presented the trophies won during the season. The winners of the various events were:—Singles championship , (Hamilton Cup), Mrs M. Reilly; runner-up, Mrs J. Mcllwrick; handicap doubles, Mesdames Reilly and W. Hamilton; runners-up, Mesdames E. The president of the club (Mrs W. Hamilton) thanked all members for their assistance throughout the season, and said it was to be (regretted that the weather had interfered with so much with play. Competitions held during the afternoon were won by Mesdames W. Balch, W. Shaw and J. F. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

The annual meeting of the Winton Women’s Institute was held in the Oddfellows’ hall. The president, Mrs D. W. McKenzie, presided over a large attendance of members. The meeting was opened with the singing of the institute song, and the reading of the creed.

The annual report stated: This year our membership has decreased to 68 members, owing to many members leaving the district, and other causes, but we have all worked together, and enjoyed our meetings. Demonstrations on wreath making and arrangement of flowers, smocking, tapestry, fruit salad, fruit preserving, ano covered boxes, and lectures on care of the teeth and foot health, have all proved instructive and interesting to members. Two social evenings were held in honour of two institute brides who have much to our regret left the district, and we feel their loss in institute work. Members visited birth-

day parties of sister institutes, and Women’s Divisions of the Farmers’ Union. The drama and musical circles have both been active during the year, and much pleasure has been derived from their efforts, by members at our meetings. At the annual drama festival, Winton entered two teams, which were successful in gaining first and second places thereby winning outright the S.S. Federation cup. The winning team, on the invitation of the Otago Federation, travelled to Dunedin, and presented the play “The Dish of Scandal” at the drama .evening during the Dominion conference week. The social committee has always given us a little brightness at the end of our meetings. Competitions have been well contested the high standard of the exhibits testifying to the ability of our members. Two shows were held during the year,

and resulted in good entries, 48 in the knitting show, and 133 in the needlework show. The institute has done its share of good deeds in the district, and is always willing to assist our local bodies in their work. The returned soldiers were also helped by the sale of goods made by their disabled members. The election of office-bearers for the incoming year resulted as follows:— President, Mrs H. J. Davie; vice-presi-dents, Mrs D. W. McKenzie and Mrs W. Balch; secretary, Miss W. Musselwhite; treasurer, Mrs S. Smith; delej gates to council meetings, Mesdames H. J. Davie and J. P. Anderssen; committee, Mesdames H. J. Davie, D. W. McKenzie, W. Balch, J. Scobie, S. Smith, D. Blyth, J. Egerton, J. Webb, R. Balch, H. A. Pierce, R. McDougall, T. Taylor, V. Lea, M. Reilly, A. Stewart, J. P. Anderssen, and Miss W. Musselwhite. Mrs Ramsay, president of the Southland Federation and voluntary organizer, addressed the meeting, and explained very fully the aims and objects of the Women’s Institute. Mrs H. J. Davie proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Ramsay. A competition for the best bloom resulted: Miss Scobie 1, Mrs R. McDougall 2, Mrs Pierce 3.

Week was held in Winton on Monday night. The Mayor (Mr T. Walker) presided over a fair attendance. The Mayor outlined the council’s proposed programme, in which it was decided to illuminate and decorate the borough from May 7 to 17 inclusive, to hold special church services on the morning of May 9, to draw up a scheme of tree planting to commemorate the Coronation, to hold a Coronation Ball on May 12, the profits to go to the King George Memorial Fund, and, if possible, to bring up an Invercargill band for a promenade concert on Friday, May 14. The Mayor then invited suggestions from the public as to the details of the various functions. There was some discussion as to the holding of a procession on May 12. The Central Basketball Sub-Association expected to have a parade of some 300 girls from the band rotunda to the basketball courts, but it was thought more fitting if there could be a procession of decorated vehicles to lead to the official ceremony at the council chambers in the morning. It was pointed out that the borough jubilee procession had been a great success, and it was finally decided to hold a fancy dress procession in the morning and to ask the public to take part in patriotic displays. The attendance of children at the procession will be left to the parents’ discretion. About the tree planting the Mayor reported that the council’s Reserves Committee and its associate members had evolved two very good schemes which would be put before the public at a later meeting. Councillor Tilley reported that he had waited upon the Civic Band in Invercargill, and it would be impossible for them to come to Winton on Friday, May 14. The only day suitable was Sunday, May 16. The Battalion Band was fully engaged all week. Prices for the Coronation Ball on May 12 were fixed at 4/- and 2/6. At the conclusion of the meeting the Mayor thanked those present for their attendance and mentioned that another public meeting would be held next Monday night.

MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB The R.S.A. Miniature Rifle Club held its second weekly shoot in the Drill Hall on Monday night. T. N. Graham 70, W. Berry 69, W. H. J. Shaw 66, R. Peterson 65, G. Pagan 65.-
