Riverton BOWLS

FRIENDLY MATCH On Saturday afternoon 12 players from the Invercargill Club played a friendly game with the Riverton Club and were defeated by 12 points. Mr F. G. Stevenson thanked the members of the Riverton Club for giving them the opportunity of coming out so late in the season, stating that the Invercargill green had closed down a month ago. They understood that the Riverton Club had not had a loss this season and they had brought out a fairly good team in the hope that they might lower the colours of the local club. He congratulated the Riverton players on their splendid record. Mr F. Girvan thanked Mr Stevenson for his remarks and said that the Riverton bowlers were pleased to have the Invercargill players and thankful to say that they had not spoilt the season’s record of no losses. Blight into the pastoral charge of Riverton took place in the Methodist Church recently. The Rev. E. B. Chambers, of Invercargill, performed the ceremony. After the Rev. Blight had taken the obligation appertaining to his office, the Rev. Hinton delivered a stirring and constructive address to the newlyinducted pastor. A social was held afterwards in the Sunday School hall. The Rev. Chambers in introducing Mr and Mrs Blight said he was sure that by their congenial spirit and personality they would soon endear themselves to the people of Riverton and the district’. Other speakers were Mr W. Ashley (on behalf of the circuit stewards); Mr G. Willis, sen., (on behalf of the people of Wild Bush); Mrs H. Johnston (Women’s Guild); Miss C. Fraser (Young Women’s Bible Class) and the Rev. A. F. Irwin (Anglican community). Items were contributed by Mrs Jaquiery (song); Miss Barron (violin solo); the Rev. Chambers (song) and Mr Pettit (pianoforte solo). GARDENING CLUB There was an attendance of 60 at the monthly meeting of the Methodist Gardening Club, including a bus load of visitors from the Otautau Club. The chairman (Mr T. King) welcomed the visitors, expressing the pleasure of the local club at such a strong representation. He hoped that the meeting would be a forerunner of other combined meetings which, besides being of definite horticulture value, helped the social side of the club’s activities. The president of the Otautau Club, Mr Mitchell, suitably replied. Mr Norman Carter, of Invercargill, the first speaker of the evening, addressed the meeting on preparations for the centenary flower show, with special reference to flowers in bloom in January. He gave cultural notes on those flowers which would be expected at such a show. These comprised sweet peas, stocks, nemesia, shirley poppies, iceland poppies, phlox drummondi, marguerites, nigella, candy tuft, summer chrysanthemums, clarkia, mignonette, larkspur, godeta calendula, clematis, delphiniums; flag irises, peony roses, antirrihinums, carnations, lilies, sweet william, pansy, violas, coral plant and other varieties.

Mr J. Lennie dealt with general garden work with a view to beautifying gardens for the centenary period, speaking on hedges, lawns, shrubs, plots and vegetables. A number of varied questions were raised to both speakers, and on the motion of the secretary, they were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Supper was then served by the ladies of the Riverton Club. Mt W. Wesney thanked the hosts for a very enjoyable and instructive evening.

A fine display of blooms comprising dahlias, gladioli and other flowers was much admired, the blooms being later sent to the public hospital.
