WINTON HIGH SCHOOL

To The Editor Sir, —Under the above heading you publish a letter from “Citcyen.” While I agree with the writer that we have splendid facilities in our local school, I cannot agree that by getting a strong committee of parents elected to the committee, we are going to stop the drift to town, for the committee is only, after all, a glorified finance committee to do the best it can with the money allotted to it for general expenses, cleaning, heating, etc. It has no real power when it comes to the question of what should be taught or otherwise. The question is asked, “Now where does the trouble lie?” I would like to repeat that question, but not to answer it, as an individual. At the same time I am convinced that if we could get the candid views of the parents who are sending their children by bus and rail 20 miles away we would find their answers all much of a sameness. It would not be a question for any school committee to decide why fie drift, but one for the governing body, the Southland Education Board. That is the body to find out why, and I think they as a body of business men realize that four brick walls do not make . school, and that to be a good investment on their books the school must be filled. From the education point of view there is no reason why children should go to town, unless they are learning a trade at the Technical School. I would like to see this matter taken up by the board. Shop in Winton, Yes; learn in Winton, Yes — but stop paying double taxation by not supporting the splendid school erected in your home town.—Yours, etc., EX-COMMITTEEMAN. April 19, 1937.
