MULAY HAFID FORMER SULTAN OF MOROCCO (United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright) PARIS, April 4. The death is announced of Mulay Hafid, a former sultan of Morocco who figured in the Agadir incident and signed the treaty proclaiming Morocco a French protectorate. Mulay Hafid was an elder brother of the Sultan of Morocco Mulay Yussuf. Their father was the Sultan Mulay Hassan who reigned from 1873 to 1894 and was followed by his son Mulay Abd-el-Asls who reigned till 1908, but was compelled to abdicate by the French who made his brother Mulay Hafid Sultan. In April 1912 he signed a treaty which brought a large part of Morocco under French protection. He was unable to withstand the resentment of the Moors over this treaty and on August 12, 1912 abdicated in return for a lump sum of 400,000 francs and a yearly allowance of 375,000 francs. Since then Mulay Hafid lived in France first in Marseilles and then near Enghien. He is said to have whiled away his time by the composition of poems. In addition to his allowance he possessed a number of diamonds, one of which of 183 carats was reputed to be the fourth largest In existence. In 1921 he found himself in difficulties and a Paris bank lent him 270,000 francs on his diamond, but later he repaid the money, recovered the diamond and in 1926 sold it for 3,000,000 francs. In connection with the negotiations carried on by Mulay Hafid’s emissary a complicated action came before a Paris court in 1926. DOWAGER MARCHIONESS OF LINLITHGOW LONDON, April 4. The death is announced of the Dowager Marchioness of Linlithgow, formerly the Hon. Hersey de Moleyns, third’ daughter of the fourth Lord Ventry. She was mother of the present Marquess of Linlithgow, Viceroy of India.
