GIANT AEROPLANES ORDERED

LARGEST LAND MACHINES IN WORLD LONDON, April 4. The first of the new ArmstrongWhitworth Ensign air liners, of which Imperial Airways have ordered 14, will be ready for flight, in about two months. They will be the world’s largest land aeroplanes and are expected to have a maximum speed of 210 miles an hour. They will supplement the Empire services on stages unsuitable for flying boats and will replace the slower machines on the Imperial Airways European services. On the latter they will carry 42 passengers and a crew of five and on the Empire routes 27 passengers by day or 20 in sleeping berths at night. , The machines will have four Siddeley Tiger engines and fuel tanks built into the wings. They will be able to fly 1000 miles non-stop against a 40-mile an hour head wind.
