(By The Curragh)

The Otautau Racing Club’s meeting will be held tomorrow. Acceptances for the Beaumont and Tuapeka meetings close today. The acceptances for the first day of the Riverton meeting show an increase of 29 over last year. J. W. Pankhurst’s team from Orari, which comprises Stolen March, Red Dragon, Warden’s Queen and Disclose, were galloped at Invercargill yesterday. Conditions were excellent for training at Invercargill yesterday. The sting was out of the course proper, which was used for fast work, the poles being about half-way out. Red Treasure (A. McKenzie) opened proceedings by running seven furlongs in Imin 39 2-ssec, the last four in 57 1- She galloped freely throughout and finished full of running. Milford (R. Humphries), Enwood (C. Humphries) and Double Shot (R. McLellan, jun.) were in that order at the end of a seven-furlong trial done in Imin 35sec, the last four in 54sec. Milford is art improved horse and Enwood is very well. Double Shot was lame in front on cooling out and will most likely be turned out, the lameness being in a leg which has troubled him previously. Sailing Lady (C. T. Wilson) registered an excellent effort when she ran seven furlongs in Imin 33 3-ssec, the first four in 52 l-ssec and the last four in 54 3-ssec. She finished on well and it was a pleasing gallop in every way. Stolen March (J. O’Connor), who looks very well, covered seven furlongs in Imin 34sec, the last four in 55 2-ssec, and could have improved on the time. He hit out freely all the way. All Humbug (G. Barclay) and Moneyless (C. Humphries) were not unduly troubled to cover six furlongs in Imin 20sec, the last four in 53sec. R. McLellan’s pupils have 'done well of late. Hom’s Reef (W. Ellis) beat Trebleack (R. Humphries) and Galleon (E. Baker) over a mile in Imin 51 4-ssec, the last four in 55 2-ssec. Horn’s Reef is improving with every gallop, and there is nothing wrong with the condition of the other pair. Paia Melba (J. Gray) had Cleaner (C. T. Wilson) as a companion in a seven-furlong spin. They covered the first three furlongs in 40sec and the seven in Imin 36 l-ssec. Paia Melba is galloping well. Red Dragon (J. O’Connor), a fine type of galloper, could have improved on the Imin 35 l-ssec it took him to run the last seven furlongs of a mile. J. W. Pankhurst’s pupil is a promising sort Orderwood (C. Ward) and Fog Peak (G. Barclay) showed that there was nothing wrong with their condition by running six furlongs in Imin 21sec, the last four in 54 3-ssec. It was a pleasing effort. Ardchoille (C. T. Wilson) and Disclose (J. O’Connor) were companions in a six-furlong gallop which was done in Imin 21 2-ssec, the last four in 53 2- It was a useful gallop by both geldings. Corban (E. Baker) and Queen Astrid (W. Ellis) were not taxed to run half-a-mile in 54 2-ssec. This pair is also in good order. Polar Star (G. Barclay), Young Sentinel (C. Ward) and Gold Street (C. T. Wilson) were in that order at the end of six furlongs in Imin 22 2-ssec, the last four in 54 4-ssec. Polar Star is a rather lazy worker. Warden’s Queen (J. O’Connor), made a good impression by the way in which she slipped over half-a-mile in 51 4-ssec. She is a very free galloper and undoubtedly has speed. Amelita (E. Baker) galloped half a mile in 52 2-ssec. She moved with her usual freedom. The northern lightweight, W. H. Jones, will be on hand to ride at the Otautau and Riverton meetings. Western Song (C. Humphries) gave Golden Song (J. A. Rowland) a start of several lengths in a six-furlong spin and finished on terms with him in Imin 20sec. The grey gelding has made an excellent recovery from his recent side injury and, is galloping well. A special passenger train is being arranged to leave Invercargill for Otautau racecourse at 10.30 a.m. tomorrow. A return. special for Invercargill will leave Otautau racecourse at 6.10 p.m. The defections from the Riverton Cup when acceptances closed were Travenna, Osculate, Ocean Singer, Admiral Drake, Superex, All Humbug and Surge. In the Aparima Handicap, Gold Boa (who is to race at Riccarton), Kinnoull, Wall Street, Enwood and Mary Pratt did not accept. Only three dropped out of the Great Western Steeplechase, Quinopal, Shillelagh Wood and Noctumus. A total of 115 acceptances was received for the first day of the Riverton meeting, the details giving a comparison with last year being as follows:—

Palmary has been nominated for the brush hurdle races at Riccarton, and A. Russell has been engaged to ride him.

CANTERBURY J.C.

J. S. Shaw will send Dollar Bill and Pahu south from Riccarton next Sunday. J. McFarlane will go to ride Dollar Bill, while G. Ridgway will be in charge, besides handling Pahu in steeplechases.

C. Davey did not take Brigadore back to Riccarton with him after the Trentham meeting, and the gelding is again being trained by his owner at Marton.

Ceme Abbas was sent on to Ellerslie after racing at Trentham, and will be in the charge of E. Scoullar on the trip. 1

Royal Chiefs win in the North Island Challenge Stakes brought his winnings up to £1585, the result of three wins and six placings in ten starts.

It is suggested that Francis Drake’s failure at Trentham was due to a heavy cold which broke on him after the race. If that is correct he may not be able to rim at Auckland at Easter.

Full Throttle, who was recently purchased by the Hon. P. C. Webb, has .entered A. S. Ellis’s stable. He is to race at Westport next week, and will be accompanied by Forum, who is partly owned by Mr Webb.

Mr Frank Rose, of Tirau, recently purchased from Southland a yearling by Balboa from Saka, by Fowling Piece. The youngster was in poor condition on arrival at Matamata, but is expected to develop into a handsome horse. He may not be put into training until early in the spring.

C. Hughes has arrived at Riccarton with Golden Lap and Signaller, and he schooled the former over two brush hurdles twice on Tuesday (reports The Press). Signaller was brought north because of the heavy state of the Invercargill track, which prevented . him from getting the desired work. He is not to be raced until later in the season, but will no doubt have some schooling before returning home.

Martara was weighted at 8.13 in the Greater Easter, gpd possibly would have have been rohandicapped if he had been paid up for. With 8.8 in the mile Easter Handicap at Auckland the Martarma colt looks well treated, but he is more likely to run in the Great Northern St. Leger, which should be a good thing for him.

A good deal of nonsense is served up to Australians regarding racing in New Zealand (states The Timaru Herald). A Sydney “Referee” writer recently stated that trotting was the major horse sport in the Dominion. If it had been stated that in Canterbury trotting ranked on equal terms with racing, the statement might have been allowed to pass, out to suggest that trotting ruled the roost in the North Island is as ridiculous as many other opinions on New Zealand that are expressed on the other side of the Tasman.

It was not till he was a late three-year-old that Chief Ranger was given his first race, and then he did not appear again till he was a late four-year-old. An even more patient policy has been adopted with Lacan, a ’ halfbrother by Lackham to Chief Ranger. Lacan is now a four-year-old. Both are out of the Thespian mare, Miss Thespian, three-quarter sister to Mermin and Water ’ Wings; and, while Lacan is by the Roi Herode horse Lackham, Chief Ranger is by Roi Herode’s grandson Chief Ruler. Lacan will race in the interests of his breeder, Mr J. T. Evans, of Feilding, and it is possible that he will also develop into a good performer.

The Hawera trainer, O. Cox, who won the Thompson Handicap with his gift horse Friesland, is no stranger to success. Among the winners he has handled are Reremoana, Marquetta, Volo, Income, Lady Cavendish, The Banker, Golden Hair, Lady Desmond and Friesland and included in the races won are the N.Z. Cup, N.Z. Derby, V.R.C. Oaks, Canterbury Cup, A.R.C. Railway Handicap (twice), G.N. Oaks, A.R.C. Royal Stakes, A.R.C. Easter Handicap (twice), Avondale All Aged Stakes, Mitchelson Cup, C.J.C. Great Easter Handicap, C.J.C. Challenge Stakes, Manawatu Cup, Taranaki Cup, Palmerston North Stakes (twice), Awapuni Gold Cup, Egmont Cup (twice), Taranaki Stakes, Wanganui Cup, Wanganui Jackson Stakes (three times), W.R.C. Wellesley Stakes, N. I. Challenge Stakes, Wellington Stakes and W.R.C. Thompson Handicap (four times).
