EXTENSIVE FLOOD DAMAGE

ESTIMATED AT £BOOO APPLICATION TO BE MADE FOR SUBSIDY The heavy flooding in various parts of the province in recent weeks has been responsible for damage to the extent of £BOOO, as far as can be ascertained at present. A statement to this effect was made by the county engineer (Mr G. R. Milward) at the monthly meeting of the Southland County Council when he reported on the flooding experienced at the end of February and the beginning of March.

The Highways Board will be responsible for £2400 of the £BOOO, and the balance of £5600 is a definite charge on the county. The council resolved to make application to the Highways Board for an additional subsidy equal to half the local body share of the cost in respect to the highways, and also to make application to the Minister of Public Works for a subsidy on at least a £2 for £1 basis towards the cost of repairing country roads and bridges.
