UNSETTLED AND SQUALLY (Special to The Times) WELLINGTON, March 7. Following is the Dominion Observatory’s special weather forecast for Southland: — Westerly winds, of strong to gale force and backing to southerlies. Weather unsettled and squally, with rain in most parts, and possibly hail on the coast. Temperatures becoming cold. Seas rough. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather unsettled, cloudy and squally, with fairly general rain, and some heavy falls, especially in districts with a westerly aspect. Temperatures becoming colder, and hail probable later in the far southern and eastern coastal areas of the South Island. General Situation.—Another rather intense depression, of a westerly type, is crossing the Dominion, while an anticyclone now covers south-eastern Australia and extends across the south Tasman Sea. Winds.—Moderate to strong northerly to westerly, of gale force in places south of - New Plymouth and Napier; backing to southerly again soon in the far south and southerlies extending over most of the Dominion within the next 24 hours. Seas.—New Zealand waters, rough south of Cape Egmont and about Cook and Foveaux Straits; elsewhere moderate, but rising later south of East Cape. Eastern Tasman Sea, variable winds. at first in the northern portion, otherwise southerlies prevailing; force .moderate to strong and increasing, with rising seas.
The weather was cold and stormy in Invercargill yesterday. On Saturday rain fell nearly all day. At 1 o’clock this morning the weather was wet and windy. The barometer readings have been as follows: — This morning (falling) 29.44 in. Saturday 29.60 in. Friday 29.82 in.
