(From The Southland Times) MARCH 8, 1887 Queen’s Jubilee.—The Christchurch City Council has appointed a committee to arrange for a public meeting to initiate proceedings with reference to her Majesty’s jubilee. Good-bye.—A ceremony of a very pleasing nature took place on Saturday evening at Messrs Thomson and Beattie’s when Mr Wilson, on behalf of the employees, presented Miss Mitchell, who leaves shortly for Wellington, with a gold bracelet. Poaching for Trout.—The two young men convicted at Gore of poaching trout from the Mimihau stream, have paid the amount of their fines—£l3 12/- each—and have been set at liberty. Miners on Strike.—Coal miners at Kawakawa, in Auckland province, have struck on account of the company giving notice of a wages reduction of 15 per cent. The men offer to accept a 5 per cent, reduction. It is stated that the former wages were 18/- a day, but they could only work eight days a fortnight.
