SOUTH CANTERBURY TOURNAMENT SOUTHLAND COMPETITORS The weather was perfect at Timaru on Friday when play in the South Canterbury croquet tournament was resumed. In the first round of the championship doubles Mrs McCreath and Miss Perrin played Mrs W. Taylor (Timaru) and Mr J. Thompson (Ashburton). There was good shooting on both sides and Mrs McCreath got going well at first and reached penultimate. With Miss Perrin’s clips on 2 back, Mr Thompson attempted to peg out, but failed with the forward ball and pegged the other. Mrs McCreath hit in well and obtained good position for penultimate, but the ball rolled back into the hoop. Mrs Taylor hit a most difficult shot and pegged out, 26—18. Mesdames McLeod and Caverhill (Gore) had a strenuous game against Mesdames Patchett and Gabites. The Gore players made a good start, getting well round while their opponents hugged corners. When Mrs McLeod and Mrs Caverhill were well round, the other pair hit in and made 11 hoops before the Southlanders pegged out. In the second round Mesdames McLeod and Caverhill played Mrs W. McLennan and Mr R. Waterhouse. All made good breaks and the game was very even throughout. With blue and yellow on 4 back, and black and red on rover, Mr Waterhouse stuck in the lift hoop, giving Mrs Caverhill a chance to take blue to the peg. Mr Waterhouse missed and Mrs McLeod pegged out, 26—20. In the handicap singles Mrs McCreath played a good game against Mrs Cleary (Timaru). Her hitting was good and she made two excellent breaks. Using her one bisque to advantage, she made a good finish, winning 26—15. This brings Mrs McCreath to the semi-finals. Miss Perrin is still in one life of the championship and in the open championship. . Mrs McCreath has one life m _ the championship, is in the open, and is in the semi-final of the handicap singles. Mrs McLeod and Mrs Caverhill are still in all events but the handicap doubles. Mrs W. McLennan is still in all events but the championship doubles.
