THE AUSTRALIAN TURF

MUTABLE WINS THE CUP GOLD ROD BEATEN , (Received March 7, 6.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March 7. The Victoria Racing Club’s autumn meeting concluded on Saturday at Flemington. The weather was threatening, but there was a fair attendance. The going was holding. Beechwood made amends for his recent failure by a narrow win in the Leonard Stakes. Namakia was never dangerous. Pamelus finished brilliantly to beat the pacemaker Gold Rod in the Lloyd Stakes. Pamelus has now had two wins and four seconds in his last six starts. He is a probable visitor to Randwick at Easter. Young Idea was a moderate third. Gay Blonde was outclassed. Bonnie Rollox, in his first start for Mr R. J. Murphy, of New Zealand, lost his rider at the third fence in the steeplechase, which was won comfortably by Seven Hills. The extreme outsider Mutable gained a surprise win in the Australian Cup. He has had a consistent record, this season, but the distance was considered beyond him. He finished brilliantly to down Pooley Bridge in the last few strides. Demotic just beat Hot Shot for the place honours. Cuddle weakened and also did Amalia and Royal Messenger. The winner is owned and trained by W. Smart, a former wellknown jockey. The time was only half a second outside the record. The consistent Le Baron led always in the Gibson Carmichael Stakes. He has had four wins and a second in the last seven starts. Dick Devon finished strongly to beat Dunloe and the pacemaker Country Party in the Farewell Handicap. Results:—
