WORKING AT TRADE ON SUNDAY
ORCHARDIST FINED (United Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, March 5. Some unusual features were associated with a case in the Magistrates Court when Simon Edilson, an orchardist, of Twyford, Hawke’s Bay, was charged with working at his trade m a public place on Sunday by driving a truck carrying pumpkins. It was stated that defendant transported his pumpkins, which he claimed were perishable goods, to Wellington, leaving part of the load at Palmerston North. The police contended that pumpkins were not perishable. Counsel for the defendant said that the latter had lost over 1000 sacks. of pumpkins last year through not getting to the market in time. He contended that cartage on Sunday was a necessity, and defendant, therefore, was exempted under the Act. The Magistrate held that the fact that a special train was provided at Hastings on Sundays for the carriage of produce, made it unnecessary to take it by road. Defendant was fined £2.
