(13), Otahu-Blackmount R.D., Otautau. COMMENTS My older cousins disappointed me this week. Please try to take more care with the construction of the verses. Sometimes I think that you really understand metre, and then I find that you are sending in entries which seem to have a different metre in each line. I want you to remember that the rhythm is the most important part of the poem. Show me that you do know what metre means. Try again', cousins. 344th COMPETITION Stjjry for cousins 11 and under: “Autobiography of a Pencil.” Prize of 2/- to Cousin Jacqueline Reid (10), 107 Lewis street. Prize of 1/- to Cousin Charlie Gordon (9), South Hillend R.D., Winton. karewa, Betty Mclntosh (10), Elgin street, Waikiwi, Rhoda Zwies (10), Lumsden. Highly commended and 2 marks to Cousins. Joyce Buttolph (10), Coronation street, June Buttolph (8), Coronation street, Norman Shields (10), Kennington, Freda Heenan (11), South Hillend R.D., Winton, Helen Goldsmith (11), Dacre, Section 2, Otara R.D., Imelda Kirkwood (11), South Hillend R.D., Winton. COMMENTS Punctuation, Cousin Jacqueline, is one of your weak points. Try to make your story a little shorter the next time. Hie story of the actual making of the pencil, though interesting, takes up too much of the autobiography. If you find that you have made a number of mistakes in the writing of the entries, my cousins, rewrite them and see how neat you can make them. Neatness counts, you know. There was only one story which was not an autobiography, and that was written by an eight-year-old. LATE ENTRIES Story for all cousins: “My Pet.” Very highly commended and 3 marks to Cousin Elizabeth Kean, A.C. (12), South Hillend R.D., Winton, Theresa Kean (9), South Hillend R.D., Winton, Frances O’Brien (12), Lilburn, Tuatapere R.D. 345th COMPETITION Poem for all Cousins: “A Maori Maiden.” For all Cousins: A Short Paragraph about the country you like best. Would you like to live there? Entries close TUESDAY, March 9. 346th COMPETITION Poem for Cousins 12 and over: “Fairy Fancies.” Story for Cousins 11 and under: “What the Chimney Said.” Entries close TUESDAY, March 16. ART CLUB Very highly commended and 3 marks to Cousin Peggy Strang (10), 23 Wellington street. This entry was omitted from the results of the Painting Competition last week. Clan Notes and News CLAN MARKS: Holly Clan 100 The Book Club MATES AT BILLYBONG This book is about ranchers at Billybong. Norah is the name of the rancher’s daughter, and she has a pony called Bobs. One day Norah fell into the river and got all muddy and wet. When she arrived home, she met her town cousin, Cecil. Norah also has a brother called Jim. One day while rounding up cattle, Norah brought in a

beast that had broken away, but when Cecil tried to do the same, his horse, Brown Betty, threw him in a wild raspberry bush. One day he took Bobs out. Bobs stumbled in some rocks, and Cecil beat him. The next morning Cecil was sent home. —Sent in by Cousin Elva Denoon (10), Southdown Estate, Glencoe R.D.
