A national five year road plan for the Union of South Africa was referred to in a speech by Dr, Wagener at the Morris works at Cowley recently. Dr Wagener is in charge of a party of students from the South African College now on a two months’ tour in Europe. Dr Wagener said that the £11,000,000 national road scheme just initiated will mean 7000 miles of new roads throughout the Union, running from Cape Town to the Limpopo, with roads from George, Port Elizabeth and East London, connecting at Bloemfontein, and one from Durban linking up with the main road at Johannesburg. There will also be a new coastal road from Cape Town to Durban. Dr Wagener added that the effect of the new roads will be an even greater popularity for the British type of light car. There is, he said, already a growing demand for cars of low horse power rating, which, being more economical, are spreading the benefits of motoring to a much wider section of the community.
