PIAKO COUNTY

CELEBRATION OF DIAMOND JUBILEE (United Press Association) TE AROHA, March 4. The diamond jubilee of the Piako County was celebrated this afternoon by a jubilee dinner tendered by the Piako County Council and attended by members of local bodies and pioneers of the district. In after-dinner speeches reference was made to the fact that the district had contributed at least three men who had made their mark in public life and Government administration. They were Sir William Herries, Sir James Parr and Sir Stephen Allen. Eulogistic reference made of the pioneers who had borne the burden of the day of bringing swamp land from its virgin state into one of high productivity. Among the very earliest settlers were Major Drummond, Major George and Messrs J. C. Firth, James Bell, the Morrin Bros, W. A. Murray and W. Shepherd Allen. A lengthy toast list was enthusiastically honoured. Among those present were Sir Stephen Allen, Sir William Hunt and also Mr Peter Gilchrist, who was county clerk in 1892.
