MAIN HIGHWAY CLEAR
WATERS SUBSIDE
The main highway at McNab is again clear for traffic, the Waikaka stream having subsided to within its banks. The road was impassable for through traffic until yesterday morning but very little rain has fallen since the river rose and the waters have fallen considerably. The Gore-Lumsden highway is still causing trouble at Mandeville. The Waimea stream rose very sharply on Wednesday night, covering the road for a distance of about five chains with two feet of water. The waters have now subsided and motor traffic can negotiate this area safely. Similar trouble has been experienced at Freshford and Waikaia, the Waikaia river having covered the road at die bridge north o' Waiparu. Reports yesterday show, that the Waikaia river is falling, but it has left much water in the low-lying areas. J The following river reports were issued by the Postmaster at Gore yesterday:— Gore.—River 6ft 3in above normal; weather fine but overcast. Glenaray.—River Ift 6in above normal and falling; weather fine. Waikaia.—River 3ft above normal and falling; weather fine. Garston. —River 2ft 6in above normal; weather fine but overcast. Balfour. —River 4ft lOin above normal and falling.
