The Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister of Industries and Commerce, Minister of Railways and Minister in Charge of the Scientific and Industrial Research Department, arrived in Invercargill last evening. He was accompanied by Mr G. H. Mackley, general manager of railways, Mr K. M. Sleight, private secretary, Mr W. J. Munro, secretary to Mr Mackley, Mr F. Johnson, secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce, and Mr G. G. Stewart, publicity editor of the Railways Magazine. The Minister was met by the Mayor, Mr John Miller, Mr W. M. C. Denham, M.P., and the Hon. T. F. Doyle, M.L.C. Yesterday the Minister visited the Waimea Plains, Switzers, Wyndham and Seaward Bush lines, and in the evening received several deputations at the Grand Hotel. Today he will visit the Bluff, Wairio and Tuatapere branch lines, and inspect the Ohai coal field. In the evening, at Invercargill, he will receive further deputations and attend a complimentary social function. Messrs J. Hamilton and A. Rose (Christchurch) are at the Club Hotel. Mr H. Cranswick, new business supervisor for the A.M.P. Society, accompanied by Mr H. W. Piper, New Zealand supervisor, will arrive in Invercargill on Sunday. Messrs A. J. Allen, J. Richardson and H. F. Larson (Dunedin), M. McGrath and J. Morrow (Alexandra), W. J. Munro, K. Slight, G. H. Mackley and F. Johnson and Dr Mirams (Wellington) are at the Grand Hotel. The Hon. R. T. Ball, a member of the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales and a former Cabinet Minister under three governments, arrived in Invercargill yesterday, in the course of a New Zealand tour, and will leave today for Wellington. He is accompanied by Mrs Ball. Because of ill-health Mr A. B. Lane has resigned his position as manager of the United Press Association. Mr Lane was appointed manager in 1930. Prior to that he was news editor of The Christchurch Times and Star and has held executive positions on leading newspapers in the South Island.—Press Association. A Gazette notice issued last evening announces the following appointments to tiie Advisory Council of Scientific and Industrial Research: Professor H. G. Denham (chairman), Professor J. On Wednesday members of the maintenance staff of the Railway Department at Invercargill met in the permanent way office to bid farewell to Mr L. Whittington, inspector of permanent way, on the eve of his departure to Dunedin on promotion. Messrs McKee, Hardcastle and Murgatroyd, on behalf of the works staff, and Messrs Paine, Soper, Radka, Ford, Bishop, White and Murray, on behalf of the permanent way staff between Tuatapere, Wairio, Tokanui and Bluff, congratulated Mr Whittington on his well-earned promotion and wished him success in the future. Mr Whittington was presented with a travelling rug for himself and a handbag for Mrs Whittington. Mr Whittington returned thanks.
