AN EXPLANATION

To The Editor

Sir, —Evidently some councillors who were in possession of certain knowledge were very apprehensive over what I was going to state in open council on Tuesday night but your report that I was asking for the resignation of the Superintendent of Reserves just about ■ contained the full content of my proposed remarks in open council. What I would have added was that I would make no further statement until the following council meeting should the resignation not be received. My reason for not making any statement in committee was that I have no faith in the Reserves Committee of our council. On previous occasions when any matter concerning the Reserves Department/ came before the council, it was immediately left to the Reserves Committee to report. Their “Hush, hush” method .of dealing with complaints from employees, etc., did not suit me. Moreover, my responsibilities as a councillor are to the ratepayers and I absolutely refuse to have the council act as my soul confessors.— Yours, etc., H. RITCHIE. March 4, 1937.
