MIDWIVES PREFERRED TO HOSPITALS
FAMOUS OBSTETRICIAN’S OPINION. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rcc. 5.5 p.m.) Chicago, November 12. Dr Joseph Delee, internationally famous as an obstetrician and founder of the Chicago lying-in hospital, which has one of the lowest maternity deathrates in the world, on the occasion of his 67th birthday declared that most women were better off giving birth in homes instead of hospitals. Commenting on surveys showing that midwives had fewer deaths than hospitals, Dr Delee said that midwives did not interfere with normal birth and mothers were not exposed to fevers and contagious diseases as in a general hospital. Only doctors of long experience in metropolitan maternity centres could handle complications properly.
