Stewart Island
Stewart Island is a most beautiful place, with its bush, beaches and lovely long walks. I think if I were living in the town, I would always come to the island for my holidays. One could go to various places in a boat and have a most enjoyable day’s outing, picnicking, swimming, and in the evening, dancing and going for beautiful moonlight walks. The children on the Island have a nice beach in front of their school, which they play on when they are not in school. I think if I ever went to town to live I would always want to come back to Stewart Island. I also think I would miss the lovely beaches very much. —3 marks to Cousin Dorothy Armstrong, Half Moon Bay, Stewart Island.
Who tried to make bread without yeast, And the poor girl she wailed, When she found the bread failed, This silly young girl from the East. There once lived a man in a house, He stayed with a tiny pet mouse, But the poor mouse it died, And the poor old man cried, This lonely old man in the house. There was once a man with a cow, And oft to his pet would he bow, The cow gave him milk. And he dressed her in silk, This lucky young man with a cow. —6 marks to Cousin Mary Lobb A.C. (13), Box 28 Edendale. There was a young boy called Bill, Who always climbed a hill. He climbed and climbed, Till he was blind, What a silly young boy called Bill. —2 marks to Cousin Margaret Kirkwood (9), South Hillend, Winton R.D. There was a young fellow from the South. Who always slept with his thumb in his mouth, So I screamed, And I dreamed, About the silly young fellow from the South.
