ROAD OR STREET?
RESIDENTS’ PLEA TO COUNCIL At last night’s meeting of the City Council the following petition, signed by Mr C. B. Tapley and 23 other owners and occupiers of properties in Dalrymple road, was received:— “We, being owners and/or occupiers of properties having a frontage to Dalrymple road, request that the name ‘Dalrymple road’ be not altered as proposed to ‘Dalrymple street,’ and in so doing respectfully draw attention to the following considerations: — “(1) There are very many instances in cities both large and small of streets having the word ‘road’ as part of their names. “(2) The use of the word ‘road’ frequently has an interesting historic basis and this applies to Dalrymple road, the street having, it is believed, been named on the subdivision of Appleby township about 70 years ago, the street then being a highway immediately adjoining the old borough of Invercargill. “(3) There does not appear to be any adequate reason for the alteration of the name which has been established in citizens’ minds by very long use and will, notwithstanding any alteration, continue to be used by many.” It was decided that the petition lie on the table until the next meeting.
