MAIN ROAD TO BEACH
SOUTHLAND COUNTY WORK TAR-SEALING OF TWO MILES Two miles of the main road to Oreti Beach from the City Council boundary at the west end of Stead street to the Oreti river bridge, will be tar-sealed by the Southland County Council within the next week. Dunn’s highway, the official name for the continuation of Stead street to the beach, will be closed from to-day, and the county engineer, Mr G. R. Milward, expects the work to be completed in a week possibly in less time if there is. an unbroken spell of fine weather. The position when this work is completed will be that the middle section of the main road to the beach will be tar-sealed and the beginning of it—within the City Council’s boundaries—and the last section from the Oreti river to the beach itself will not be sealed. The two miles of sealing are being done by tender for the Southland County Council, the contractors being New Zealand Highways Constructors, Ltd. The whole of the local body share of the cost of the work is being met by the County Council. The'tar-sealing will cover the road for a width of 18 feet—the standard width on most sealed Southland roads —but as a precautionary measure the sealing will extend two more feet in width at each corner in the two miles. City Council's Part. The City Council desires that the county should bear some of the cost of the reconstruction of the city s share of the road, but this request the County Council has refused. A clause in the report of the Works Committee at last night’s meeting of the City Council gave the position as follows:— . “The council at its last meeting deferred consideration of the committee’s recommendation in respect to tenders for the contract for the reconstruction of Tweed and Stead streets. The Southland County Council has advised that it is not prepared to agree to any portion of the cost of the reconstruction of Stead street and Tweed street west. With reference to boundary streets, the Southland County Council has decided to hold the whole matter over until such time as the amalgamation proposal, which this council has in hand is finally settled. “The committee recommends that the matter be left to the Mayor, the Town Clerk and the city engineer to obtain legal advice upon the position, and if this advice is favourable, the necessary application be made for the matter to be dealt with by a commission.” The report was adopted.
