FARM LABOUR

Work Of Placement Service (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, October 21. Questions which have been asked recently about a shortage of farm labour were the subject of replies by the Minister of Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) in the House of Representatives to-day. The Minister said that the position was being closely watched. If suitable unemployed men were available for positions offered through the employment bureaux the work was offered to them, and, if the offers were not accepted, the men were then treated as voluntarily unemployed and denied any further relief. The assistance of the placement service was used to obtain labour from other centres in cases where men were not available locally. A census of farm labour requirements taken recently by the department did not disclose any great difficulty in satisfying applications, if the wages and conditions offered were reasonable. Farmers were advised to apply to the Labour Department for their labour requirements and every effort would be made to meet all requests.
