WHEN ROYALTY DANCES

VIEWS OF ENGLISH ACTRESS. It is true that King Edward is a good dancer, but compared with his brother, the Duke of Kent, he is practically a novice. That is the opinion of Madeleine Carroll, who has danced frequently with both of them. Once presented at Court at Buckingham Palace when the late King George was sovereign, the English actress often attended parties at St. Jam'-s’s Palace, home of the present King when he was Prince of Wales, and frequently accompanied both him and his brother on excursions into London night life. “King Edward,” she said, “is really a fine dancer—particularly in the Viennese waltz and the tango. But the Duke of Kent! Why, he’s really brilliant.” A regular member of the “Prince’s set,” which made her the envy of most of the women in England—let alone the rest of the world—the actress gave up a Mayfair career for Hollywood and declares she is glad she had the chance of doing it. “I want a film career, not the life of a Mayfair belle,” she explains. “And the best chance of realizing my ambition lies in Hollywood. No matter what they say about the threat of a British movie invasion, this is still the capitol of the industry and I don’t see any real signs of a change.”

Marian Marsh has been given the leading role in Columbia’s “Queer Money.” Harry Lachman is to direct the next full-length Laurel and Hardy comedy, “The Money Box.” Janet Gaynor is now holidaying with her mother at La Quinta, before returning to 20th. Century-Fox Studios for a new picture to be selected by Zanuck.

Shirley Temple takes a milk bath for the first time in her life in the Fox musical now in production, “The Poor Little Rich Girl.” Paramount has abandoned the idea of remaking “Beau Geste.” It believes that stories with desert backgrounds will be redundant after “Under Two Flags,” and “Garden of Allah.” Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer has begun production again on its latest Tarzan picture, which has been temporarily shelved for the past seven months. The film is now to have a strong comedy element.

Bernard Vorhaus has been signed to direct “Cotton Queen,” for Joe Rock. The film will deal with mill life and the speedway, and Britain’s 1936 Cotton Queen. Bolton’s Miss Bower, will appear in it.
