OTAHU-CLIFDEN ROAD.

To The Editor.

Sir, —I noticed in the columns of a recent issue of your paper a letter by “Fallen Arches,” who expressed my sentiments in his endeavour to lay before the council concerned the condition of the Otahu-Clifden road. He has my deepest sympathy. Now having had to travel over this stretch of road, (because of necessity) for several months my cranial cavity was at last pierced by that well-known proverb, “Necessity is the mother of invention,” and I now offer a suggestion to all motorists to save them the chipping of false teeth, the jarring of the spinal cord and the splintering of wooden legs by proposing the introduction of well-sprung and air cushioned seats which would render invaluable assistance to all motorists travelling this undulating flat. Flat is not appropriate as the only “flat” on this road is the motorist.

Should some interested gardening experts require a new idea for a rockery I recommend to them that portion of the Otahu road near the corner of the Motu mill. The Minister of Transport suggested the idea of scrapping all the ancient chariots, but I would suggest that a good test for these buses would be a run over the abovementioned stretch of road and should they return to Clifden, this would signify that they are still entitled to a certificate of road worthiness for a further period. When first I travelled this road it was necessary for me to have an electric horn on my bus but now I find this is not needed because I can be heard long before I am visible. I see “Fallen Arches” has remarked on the apparent air-mindedness of the local residents. I little wonder at this as after my own nerve-racking experience

on this flat I am now contemplating on joining the Southland Aero Club. Surely this is not a very handsome contribution to the ideas of H. G. Wells as portrayed in his book “Things to Come.” Well as a pot-hole now looms before my optics I must apply the brake, —Yours, etc., ROAD SHOCKS. Otahu, October 19, 1936.
