To the Editor.

Sir, —In an interview which your paper had with Mr Aiton, representative of the Derby Chamber of Commerce, I notice that he was extremely pleased with the great prosperity which was now obtaining in Great Britain, a prosperity brought about by the immense increase in armaments.

If Mr Aiton would only look a little further ahead perhaps he would see a blood-stained battlefield and millions of the world’s defenceless women and children stricken down with poisonous gas. This is the only result possible from the present race for armaments. Surely we as a nation should be able to rejoice in a prosperity brought about by a carefully administered currency which will work in the interests of the nation, and not have to rely on “armament taxation.”—Your, etc.,
