DIRT IN MILK

SAMPLE OF CITY SUPPLY OFFENDERS TO BE PROSECUTED Some samples of milk taken for test from Invercargill suppliers recently showed added water, and one sample was contaminated, the analyst’s report said, with visible dirt. These facts, reported to the City Council at its meeting last night, drew some strong comment from Crs A. W. Jones and W. G. Tait. Cr Jones said the position was most serious and it was time effective steps were taken to deal with the deliverers. It was a disgrace to sell some of the milk that had been tested—one sample was filthy and others with added water. It was high time the position was cleaned up. The Works Committee was very pleased that the tests had set the ball in motion for improving the quality, he said. “I hope a few prosecutions will abate the problem—or shall I call it a menace,” he said. Cr Tait agreed, stating that it was a pity that the council could not get at the original suppliers of the milk. A clause in the report of the Works Committee, after referring to the samples taken, suggested that the Health Department be informed that the committee viewed with apprehension the results of the analysis of the milk samples taken by the city inspector. It was further recommended that the department take immediate action to remedy the sale of milk containing water and visible dirt as revealed in some of the samples taken. An addition to the report stated that the Town Clerk was taking legal proceedings in some cases.
