MAGISTRATE’S COURT

TUESDAY. (Before Mr W’. H. Freeman, S.M.) A married woman, whose name was suppressed, appeared on a charge of stealing an overcoat valued at £4 4/-, the property of H. and J. Smith, Ltd. She pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant Thompson told the Court that on Friday last accused was seen leaving H. and J. Smith’s with a parcel under her arm. She was later interviewed by detectives and admitted having stolen an overcoat. In fining her £2 10/- the Magistrate warned her that if she appeared before him on a similar charge she would be imprisoned. The offence was known as shop-lifting and was treated seriously everywhere in New Zealand.
