Some effort was required of the brigade to extinguish the outbreak. PERSONAL. Mr R. D. Pearce, of the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, Winton, is at present on annual leave. Mr J. A. Bartlett, of Mataura, is relieving. Mr J. W. Hill, of Fairlie, who was formerly in business at Winton, visited the town. Tire Rev. John McGregor, of Centre Bush, occupied the pulpit at the services of the Winton and Lochiel Presbyterian Churches, and read an edict from the Southland Presbytery informing the congregation that the Rev. Hamilton suggested that the competitions, which were formerly held in Winton, should be revived to raise funds for the Athenaeum. The proposal met with unanimous support, and it was decided to consider the organization at a later date. It was mentioned that the festival would probably be held during the May school term holidays and particular attention would be paid to the drama section, as well as music, dancing and other aspects. ___________
