Gore THE AERODROME

LEVELLING WORK The work of levelling the Gore aerodrome, which is situated on the property of Mr John Hanley, Knapdale, is progressing satisfactorily, after having been interrupted by wet weather. The work has been undertaken by the Public Works Department, and it is estimated that the total cost of preparing the surface of the aerodrome will be about £lOOO. The aerodrome covers an area of approximately 50 acres of land naturally suitable for the purpose, in that comparatively little levelling is required. The specifications of the present job provide, however, that all unevenness in the surface is to be removed and on the east end of the landing ground, where the bulk of the present work is being carried out, annroximately 9000 yards of soil require to be shifted. This section of the work is being done by a modem excavator, and ploughing and general cultivation are expected to bring the western section into a suitable state. The excavation work is being undertaken on contract under the direction of an officer of the Public Works Department. The excavator, which is of New Zealand manufacture, is particularly interesting, as it is the first of its type to be seen in Southland. It is of a rotary type drawn by a 45 horsepower Diesel tractor and has a capacity of four cubic yards of soil. It cuts a strip 27 inches wide and can be adjusted for any depth to about nine inches. When working in friable soil it is capable of spreading the soil evenly at the point of deposit from two or three inches deep upwards. It operates quickly and gathers a load in an average of once every five minutes. A Careful Survey. The whole of the aerodrome area has been carefully surveyed and pegs have been driven at intervals of a chain in all directions to indicate whether the soil is to be levelled or filled. Mostly it is possible to deposit soil taken from one point in a depression nearby, but there will be fairly extensive filling and levelling at the extreme eastern end of the landing ground. When finished, the aerodrome will be slightly higher in the centre than at the edges in order to give a general fall in all directions and ensure satisfactory drainage. It is expected that after the rough excavation work is completed it will be necessary to plough the whole area and carry out a certain amount of cultivation work before the required evenness of surface is secured. A suitable mixture to give a closely growing sward of permanent grass will be sown as soon as the cultivation work is completed. Two representatives of the contractors are at present engaged on the excavation work and where possible they are working in two shifts of 12 hours each. A considerable amount of time has been lost since they arrived on the job, however, and the work has been delayed to such an extent that it will probably be a further fortnight before their part of the work is completed. REPERTORY SOCIETY. A social was held by the Gore Repertory Society last night. There was a good attendance of members and visitors. Two one-act plays were presented and the performers were warmly complimented on their work. The first play was “The Grand Chan’s Diamond,” by Allan Monkhouse, which was read by the following cast: Mrs R. I. Rutherford (Mrs Perkins); Mr'H. L. Smith (Mr Perkins); Miss Joan Glasson (Miss Perkins); Mr John Glasson (a man in black), Mr H. W. Milne (Albert Watkins); and Mrs R. G. Stokes (chorus). The second play was “Half-an-Hour,” by Sir James Barrie, which was acted by the following cast: Miss Peggy Glasson (Lady Lilian Garson); Mr R. Fisher (Richard Garson); Mrs Valerie Collie (Susie); Mr Harold Boult (Hugh Paton); Mr D. G. Williamson (Dr Brodie); Miss Molly Fisher (Mrs Redding); Mr R. Anderson (Mr Redding) and Mr Harold Boult (Withers). After supper Mr D. L. Poppelwell returned thanks to the performers and to Miss Margaret Boult for providing musical items. HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS. The annual sports of the Gore High School which were postponed last week because of unpleasant weather, were held yesterday in bright sunshine. Apart from a strong breeze, the conditions were ideal.

The rector (Mr E. R. Rowntree) was starter and members of the staff were judges. The fields were large in most of the events and competition was keen. Points were allotted to the houses, and, in the results so far, Hunter House has a substantial lead. A 30-a-side mixed relay race in the competition was held and created much interest. The results are as follows:— Boys’ Events.
