99 MATCHES

RICHARDSON’S RECORD

An interesting record of the games and innings played by the South Australian cricketer, V. Y. Richardson, appears in the latest issue of The Sydney Referee.

Richardson, up to date, has played in 99 matches for South Australia and it is probable that he will complete the hundred. This will be pleasing to him in the centenary year of his State. Richardson’s complete batting analysis is: 99 matches, 184 innings, 7 not out, 7671 runs, 231 highest score, 43.33 average. It will be interesting to see if Richardson passes C. Hill’s great record for- his State. In all matches Hill has the following analysis: 87 matches, 160 innings, 9 not out, 365 n.o. highest score, 8027 runs, 53.15 average. Richardson has only 356 runs to make. If he plays regularly for his State in the coming season he should do it. C. V. Grimmett also has some fine records for South Australia. This season he might add more laurels to his name. A few seasons ago he passed G. Giffen’s long outstanding record of 419 wickets for South Australia. Grimmett, to date, has taken 501 wickets. Grimmett’s batting record is worthy of note. 73 matches, 122 innings, 71 n.o. highest score, 2200 runs, 20 not out, 21.65 average. Though not an outstanding batsman, he makes a few runs when his side is out of luck. As it is definite that A. F. Kippax has retired Richardson is likely to run into premier position among the Sheffield Shield aggregates until Don Bradman forges to the front. Clem Hill, at present, has the highest number of runs to his name, 6274, Kippax coming next with 6096, then Richardson with 6093. Don Bradman has made 5372 runs at an average of 109.63! It is almost beyond conception. Richardson has made 27 centuries in first-class cricket, two of these (100 and 125) in one match against New South Wales.
