BRISK MARKETS PRIME BULLOCKS 30/DEARER FAT WETHERS ADVANCE 1/6 A HEAD There were improved markets for fat cattle and fat sheep at the weekly Lorneville stock market yesterday. Good quality bullocks advanced in value by about 30/- a head and cows and heifers also improved. Fat wethers sold well, values being about 1/6 a head better than those ruling last week. Operators were particularly interested in lightweight wethers. There were not many ewes yarded, and they • sold on a firm market. The store cattle entry was one of the biggest for some time. The quality was good, though, and competition was keen. Yesterday’s yardings and those of last week were as follows:— Oct. 20. Oct. 13. Fat cattle 115 116 Store cattle 358 245 Fat sheep 598 616 Store sheep 240 355 Yesterday’s entry included 20 dairy cows, 8 vealers and runners and 3 fat lambs. Fat Cattle. The beef yarding was only very slightly smaller than that of last week. A good proportion comprised unfinished animals, and no really prime heavyweight cattle were yarded. There were some handyweight bullocks, cows and heifers of very attractive quality, however, and the market for anything of good quality was very keen. Values for bullocks improved by about 30/- a head and in some cases even more. Cows and heifers, too, were dearer, but not to the same extent.

Good quality bullocks brought from £l2 15/- to £l4, good quality handy weights from £ll 5/- to £l2 5/-, and lighter weights from £9 10/- to £lO 10/-. Prime quality heavyweight cows made up to £ll 15/-, prime quality from £9 15/— to £lO 10/-, good quality from £8 5/to £9 5/-, medium quality from £7 to £7 15/-, and aged and inferior from £4 10/- to £6. Good quality handyweight heifers brought from £8 10/— to £9 12/6, and lightei - weights from £7 5/- to £B.

There was an exceptionally big yarding of store cattle, and competition was keen, particularly for well-bred Hereford steers and heifers. There were not many big steers yarded, but there were some good lines of young cattle. A special entry of two-year-old Hereford steers made £4 16/-, and a line of yearlings from the same vendor, Mr J. G. Macalister (Kauana), brought £3 11/-. Empty heifers brought up to £4 11/-, two-year-olds from £2 to £3 2/6. Empty cows realized up to £3 10/-, and two-year-old steers from £3 15/- to £5. A smaller entry of dairy cows included some good sorts which sold at up to £6. The National Mortgage and Agency Co., Ltd., sold:—On account of T. Hadley, 24 two-year-old steers at £4 5/-,
