CROQUET

SOUTHEND CLUB. The Southend Croquet Club held the opening of the season on Saturday. The vice-president welcomed the croquet players and their friends. Mr A. W. Jones, chairman of the Reserves Committee of the City Council, in declaring the green open, commented favourably on its condition and of the surroundings generally and wished the club a successful season. He stated that the council was sympathetically disposed to sports bodies and the utilization of reserves for such purposes where practicable. Competitions were held during the afternoon, the following being the prizewinners:—Mrs Telfer (Invercargill), ladder; Miss Stead (Southend), angles; Mrs Hore (Christchurch), French; Mrs Corbet (Invercargill), golf; Mrs Robertson (Rugby Park), corner ball.
