GERMANY SHORT OF WOOL

RAPID SHRINKAGE OF STOCKS SYNTHETIC PRODUCT TO BE DEVELOPED (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) London, October 18. The Berlin correspondent of the Australian Associated Press says that a serious shrinkage of Germany’s wool stocks, owing to her inability to export sufficient manufactures to obtain foreign exchange to pay for her imports, is shown in statistics given by the German Wool Trade Association. The figures disclose that the stocks of cornbed materials, chiefly crossbreds, held by five German conjbing works decreased during September from 4,508,000,0001 b to 4,028,000,0001 b, compared with 10,263,000,0001 b held in September 1935. The scoured wool held by 10 German scouring works decreased during September from 4,503,000,0001 b to 4,244,000,0001 b, compared with 8,226,000,0001 b held in September 1935. The. fall consisted chiefly of 2,125,000,000 lb of crossbred "wool. It is problematical whether Germany will be able to replenish her stocks under the present circumstances, but five large cellulose wool factories—which is the starting-point of both synthetic wool and cotton—recently began operating with a sixth building at Seigburg. They aim at an output of 80,000 tons of cellulose wool a year by the end of 1937, which is enough in an emergency to cover half of Germany s woollen needs.
